What is HapKiDo

The 3 principles of Hap-Ki-Do

Training is taught and practised according to the 3 principles of Hap-Ki-Do; they come together in every technique. By studying the techniques, students get to know the 3 principles and learn to put them into practice. We strive to build these principles into our techniques!

합 – HAP

HAP – Together – meaning the harmony of body and mind

기 – KI

KI – Power – it refers to both mental and physical power and arises from concentration

도 – DO

DO – Way – the way of life, the teaching method

The principle of the circle

The circle is a basic form of nature. Circular movements feel harmonious both for the observer and for the person performing them. For Hap-Ki-Do techniques this means that a force should be deflected in a circular path. By recognising the attacking energy and carrying it further, the HapKiDo-In can use it to their own advantage. In this way the Hap-Ki-Do technique can turn the attacking energy against the attacker.

The principle of flow

Energy flows through every body in an inner current (Ki). Through breathing methods, Hap-Ki-Do students learn to let this energy flow to particular points and along specific pathways. Bringing the energy together can produce great effects. In a strike or a kick, for example, the energy is concentrated on one small point in order to achieve the greatest possible effect.

The principle of impact

Physically, everything we can see has an effect on us. That means, for example, posture, stance, clothing, gestures, facial expression and movement, just as colours and shapes also make an impression on us. Psychological impact comes from everything we cannot see but can sense or feel intuitively.
